NOVEMBER 2006, CITY HOSPITAL.
THE COMBINATION APPROACH TO SUCCESSFULLY TACKLING FIBROMYALGIA.
In November 2006 the Nottingham group committee held a fibromyalgia presentation for medical Professionals at the Nottingham City Hospital, Professionals were invited from Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire with invitations sent to Rheumatology Departments, Physiotherapy Departments, Pain Management, Dieticians and OT’s. The guest speaker was Mrs. Norah Wickerson Chartered Physiotherapist and Nutritional Advisor who was presenting her Combination Approach To Succesfully Tackling Fibromyalgia. After getting herself well from fibromyalgia in 2000 Norah began working with fibromyalgia sufferers with remarkable results. Norah’s Combination Approach is non invasive and does not require medication it simply requires the patient to be prepared to follow her instructions 100% with dedication and determination to become well from this physically debilitating condition. Norah gave a three hour power point presentation with the Professionals finding the information about fibromyalgia extremely interesting, the question and answer period raised many questions including “how can we help the fibromyalgia patient” and “what is the best way in which to approach the treatment of fibromyalgia”, discussion with the Professionals also gave useful feedback to ourselves. Again, engaging with the Professionals allows dialogue to be exchanged between the patient and the Professional with “both sides” represented, on one hand we have the opportunity to show the Professionals that we are every day people affected by the condition and on the other hand we are uniquely placed to listen to the professionals difficulties in treating and helping the fibromyalgia patient. Feedback from engaging with the Professionals has helped us immensely in our awareness strategies and forward planning, by working together both patient and Professional can benefit immensely. In March 2005 I spoke with Norah about her producing an information book that we could hand out to professionals when we attend medical conventions to raise awareness of fibromyalgia, Norah took time out of her very busy schedule and kindly produced her book “Successfully Tackling Fibromyalgia” that is produced by the Nottingham group, the book is free to Professionals as it was initially produced for the medical professionals as part of the Nottingham groups awareness plans, patients may purchase the book by contacting the Nottingham group via their website at www.fibrofocus.org.uk the cost is £5-00 including postage and packaging, £4-00 when purchased at the groups meetings. If you should wish us to forward the book to your medical professional please let us know via our link on our website with the details of where you would like the book sending to. In 2006 Norah produced the “More Bakes, Less Aches” recipe book, produced by the Nottingham group, for those following the Combination Approach To Successfully Tackling Fibromyalgia, if you should wish to purchase the recipe book please log onto the Nottingham group website at www.fibrofocus.org.uk To find out more about the Combination Approach to Successfully Tackling Fibromyalgia please log onto Norah’s website at www.TacklingFibro.co.uk Norah has spoken to many fibromyalgia groups since January 2006, was the guest speaker at the Fibromyalgia All Party Parliamentary Group (FAPPG) in London in May of this year and has made presentations to medical professionals including multidisciplinary teams, if you wish to talk to Norah about giving a presentation to your specific area of involvement with fibromyalgia patients, again please log onto Norah’s website. © Chair of the group, Christine Brown.
